Set high on a cliff facing the Ocean, the Aerie harnesses both the landscape and the view. Originally conceived as a long Modernist box, it spans a small natural valley in the landscape like a bridge. This anomaly of topography allowed the centre portion to drop allowing a covered portion under the house that led out to a terrace overlooking the view. Access was achieved by a linear glass box containing a staircase that descends to the exterior below where there is an outdoor kitchen an eating area.

Glass and views are the mantra and every room has a view to the water. Orientation is along an axis to the ocean that aligns with a lighthouse in the distance. The house is cruciform in layout allowing different wings for the clients and guests as well as a separate children’s “crowsnest.” Central to all of these disparate elements is the Great Room that houses the main living and dining area where all come to meet.

Significant care was given to developing strategies to outbuildings and docks as well as developing the roads and infrastructure to the house. Nature was a major focus whereby the landscape was interpreted for the new house and then rewilded with native plants and species while taking advantage of the elevated view. The result is a place that celebrates the drama of the nature around it while keeping the native feel and wildness of the landscape.
