The Beach House

West Vancouver

The Beach House is a contemporary West Coast play on the traditional Shingle Style Houses of the East Coast. Unlike them it picks up on more contemporary Mid-Century tradition with flat roof forms, corner windows, steel columns and rain chains but still maintains a languid surf sensibility in keeping with its waterfront aesthetic. It has a real “chill” vibe.

Given the immaculate views from the front, the house has been pushed to the back of the lot allowing the opportunity for this large covered outdoor space at the front. It really is taking the front porch to the next level and promotes neighbourliness and fabulous sunsets while allowing the interiors and the exteriors to merge for gracious seaside living. This was achieved by developing various strategies to get the main floor as high as possible to allow views from all the rooms.

Large full height windows draw the views into the house while washing the house with southern light. The covered porch shields the harsh direct light but all the reflective surfaces and the light millwork ensure that the house remains bright and welcoming. It is truly a place to hang out !
